Call To Action

Call to Action May 9, 2015
HF635 is the Omnibus Transportation Bill
ABATE of Iowa would like Amendment H1331 removed from this bill.
Action Needed:
We need you to write an individual impact statement.  How will this bill affect YOUR life?
1.  I have some classic cars that have plates on them but I only insure with liability when I take them on a classic cruise.
2.  I have a project bike that I keep plates on but only insure when I'm test driving.
3.  I have a "rainy day policy".  I can ride my bike on nice days outside of the "riding season".
4.  I only insure my motorhome for road use twice a year, when I move it to the lake and when I move it home.
5.  I have several vehicles and although I keep plates and comprehensive insurance year round, I only put liability or "road insurance" when I'm taking that vehicle off my property.  Not seasonally.
6.  My tax dollars are going to be used to pay an out of state company $2M a year to that will also get my personal information including my name; date of birth; driver license number; VIN number; make, model and year of my vehicles; my insurance policy including effective date; and any other information they deem necessary to administer the program.
7.  I will stop putting plates on because I don't want to cover insurance on a vehicle that doesn't go on the road.
8.  I will have to take time off work to go to a courthouse to put plates on an extra vehicle that currently I just go ahead and register every year.

This bill is expected to be passed this week.  We need this amendment removed prior to the final version.
This issue was brought up by an ABATE member that is impacted by this bill.   Anyone, whether an ABATE member or not, can send an impact statement.
This amendment has good intentions but these unintended consequences are not acceptable.  We support current Iowa Code requiring financial liability for all vehicles on our roads.  We encourage adequate uninsured/underinsured coverage as well as deductibles only as large as an individual can afford to meet.

Any questions can be directed to any Legislative Committee member or State Legislative Officer Jodi Right.
