District 10’s meeting was called to order by Doug Smith, District Coordinator on January 15 at Big John’s in Bode. MRF-Jess indicated there had been two calls to action in January from the MRF. The call to action was in regards to a trust being broken that would allow hiway user fees to be used for non-transportation purposes. Check out the MRF website if you wanted more information.

STR: DL gave the share the road report for Dean. He indicated the state had approved the new STR t-shirts and they would be going on sale shortly. He also reported that last year ABATE presented the STR program to 10,113 people and District 10 had presented to 1068, which is ten percent of the states total presentations and he wanted to thank everyone who helps out in the District with STR. He also indicated that it had been approved at BOD to go allow American Concrete paint one of their trucks with our STR info on it

PR: Ginny indicated she didn’t have anything but Harry had gotten a brochure that Barb had put together that she wanted to hand out quarterly at the meetings with upcoming events, announcements and info on District 10.

Assistants Report: Ron passed around a thank you card from New Opportunities from Greene County for toys from our toy run. They indicated it had helped a large number of families who otherwise wouldn’t have had a Christmas without it. DL reported the following business’ memberships had lapsed and needed to be contacted: Mineral City, Judd’s, Prairie View, Riverside, 3rd Base and Midnight Bar. He also indicated the bowling tournament against District 8 was going to be on February 26th at Pocahontas

State Meeting: Doug reported the following information: It was brought up that Farm Bureau would like ABATE to join together with other organizations in Iowa to lobby the State Legislature to hold the DNR accountable and to do more to reduce the deer population in Iowa. Mark Maxwell gave his opinion and cautioned us to be careful what we ask for and what could happen if we lobby the legislature about the “dangers to motorcyclists from deer” and the possibility it could lead to a helmet law. Doug indicated Jim West due to a new job had resigned as state PAC officer and anyone interested in the position could contact the state office. It was also brought up that the state legislative committee will continue to work on the Right of Way law to see how it can be improved. It was also brought up that the NHTSA is pushing hard for a national helmet law and withholding State hiway funds is how they would accomplish this.

Old Business: None to take care of…

New Business: Doug reported we took third place at the Lights at Kennedy display and won some money. Heather made a motion we donate the money back to the Backpack Lunch program which provides lunches for needy children who possibly wouldn’t get enough to eat on the weekends. Mick seconded the motion; motion carried. Doug also indicated he would be looking for volunteers from District 10 to help with parking at Bike Night at Amigos this summer. We would be working with the Legion Riders and CMA’s to make sure no one was parking near the water shed down by Amigo’s. Harry suggested that we possibly could set up a booth at the Webster County Flea Markets this summer and sell memberships and give info on ABATE and STR. Everyone decided it would be a good idea and great PR. Harry was going to find out costs and etc and get back to us

Harlan Thompson made a motion to adjourn; Ron Daggett seconded; motion carried with Jeremy Hauck abstaining

Doug thanked the Big John for hosting our meeting and pool tournament to follow and he thanked the membership for attending.

Respectfully submitted
