District 10’s meeting was called to order by District Coordinator Doug Smith on April 16 at Riverside Tap in Lehigh. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and we had a moment of silence to honor our lost brothers and sisters. Roll call of officers was taken with Doug, D.L., Ron, Jean, Sheila, Theresa, Melissa, Dean, Barb, Mark, Larry, Scott, Harry, Ginny and Don being present. We welcomed new members and guests Julie Trowbridge, Michelle Thompson, Bunny and Shelly.

Treasurers Report: Sheila indicated the following checks had been written from the general fund;

We had one deposit to the general fund

One check had been written from the Downed Biker Fund to Floral Creations for a stepping stone for Jerry Dahl’s mother

A deposit had been made to the Toy Run from a gentleman who came up and gave money to Cheryl at Big Johns for our toy run account

Sheila indicated we needed to decide where our 10 percent of events profits needed to be distributed; Chris Rapple made a motion that it go to the Downed Biker Fund; Cheryl seconded motion carried.

Sheila also indicated she still had STR stickers, event calendars and window clings available for anyone who wanted one.

Mary Carlson made a motion to accept; Dean Summers seconded; motion carried

 

Membership: Theresa indicated we had 57 members present and four guests. She also indicated we had the following new supporting businesses:

Events: Melissa indicated that anyone who was planning on playing in the Dart Tournament needed to pay Sheila following the meeting. She also reported we have the following upcoming events;

May 7-Spring Fling-sign up at George’s Diner in Fort Dodge from 11 to 1, ending at Handlebars in Luverne for our dinner run. She also indicated that Pugs in Lohrville would be offering two dollar beers to anyone who stopped and had their run sheet stamped.

May 14 and 15-Booth at Flea Market at the Webster County Fairgrounds in Fort Dodge.

May 21-Trash Pickup with our meeting to follow at the Prowler in Humboldt. Meet at Cenex (formerly known as Ampride) at 2:00

 

Legislative: Mark indicated the governor had signed HF 290 and stabilizer wheels are now legal. He reported that SF292, which was an enhanced penalty bill died in the house. ABATE of Iowa is planning on trying again for this bill in the next session. Mark reminded everyone April 29th is the Motorcycle Safety Forum at ISU. He also reported the governor had declared May Motorcycle Awareness Month

 

MRF: Jess reported that the EPA rules regarding tail pipe emissions ends in 2016. He reported what he had learned and experienced at Heartland STEAM.

 

STR: Dean indicated that in the past week DL had presented our STR presentation to 95 students and the next STR presentation with be April 30 in Clarion at the high school. Dean also indicated he had recently got Manson and Rockwell City high schools signed up to receive our STR presentation.

 

Webmaster: Scott said he was here to report that he had nothing to report

 

PR; Ginny reminded everyone of the booth we were going to have at the fairgrounds on May 14th and 15th. Harry is planning on being there setting up at 8:00am on the 14th and anyone wanting to help could. She said that anybody who had anything they wanted to sell make sure they drop it off at Harry’s house by May 13th. She reported that Amigo’s bike night would be starting the first week in May and Ride’s Bike night would be continuing. Barb reported the second quarter newsletter was in the works and she would be emailing it shortly to everyone. She also reported she had gotten the following donations for our Toy Run Raffle;

place-gift card from both Ernie Williams in Algona and Carroll Harley Davidson and Zylstra’s in Ames was planning on donating artwork from Harley’s Heritage Collection

Place-she is working on Casey’s for a gas card. She is getting the application ready and once Doug approves she will send it to their main office. She will keep us updated on that as it progresses.

 

Assistants Report: Ron reminded everyone of the times of our gate duty and road control duty at the rally and he would appreciate all the help we can get during our assigned times

Thursday June 30th Noon to 4-Road control

Friday July 1-Noon to 4- Gate duty

Saturday July 2-4am to 8am-Road control

He also reminded everyone when we our on our poker runs or dinner runs to please respect whatever town or place we are at with regards to the noise issue. Lets not be part of the problem that we are trying to stop in Fort Dodge and respect the towns without revving up our engines and etc.

DL reminded everyone of Iowa Thunder on May 22. He also reported he had just been to the State’s legislative meeting that day and in 2010 there were 60 deaths of motorcyclists which is up from last year. He also reported that the majority of deaths were from riders 45 to 64 and we need to start preaching about the Riders Education course to people in this age group. The more deaths the state has the greater risk they can use that to get a helmet bill passed.

 

Old Business: Nothing honey

 

New Business: Brian Morey reported that Emmetsburg recently had tried to pass a city wide helmet ordinance for kids under the age of 18 riding a moped. The following people showed up to help him convince the city council why that was not a good idea; Phil McCormick, DL Peterson, Janelle Furleigh Holland, Patty Wedert, Mohawk Mike Stone, Jody Cain, Jim Klepper, Walt Richert and Mike Corley. The person on the council who was trying to get this passed indicated that it would have gone through if it hadn’t been for those ABATE people. It was brought up that the ordinance could be brought up again so we needed to watch for them to try and sneak it in. Melissa indicated she has a friend on the city council and they were going to notify her if anything was brought up again

 

Announcements: Jess is requesting help at the rodeo grounds during the rally and anyone interested see him after the meeting. There will be benefit for Bev Stines on April 30 at Charlie’s in Marshalltown. April 23rd is Blessing of the Bikes at ……………………Shawn Gardner made a motion to adjourn; Mick Evans seconded; motion carried with Slider and Jeremy Hauk abstaining.

 

Doug thanked Kelly and Riverside Tap for hosting our meeting and dart tournament. He thanked the membership for attending and Barb Loots for humbling herself and kissing butt to get donations for our Toy Run Raffle.
