November 20, 2017 - I hope to return to regular posts here, things were a little chaotic for a while but perhaps things are getting back on track
June 19, 2017 - Nice day and great meeting at Wee Willy's in Quasqueton. Real sorry to hear that Russ is having health problems, best wishes and get well soon! Having some trouble with my publishing program after updating, testing 1 2 3...
June 13, 2017 - Due to a number of factors it's been difficult for me to keep up with the website here. I apologize and hope things will slow down and allow me to spend more time updating and keeping up. Currently however I don't have information beyond the June meeting. I also started getting email in from Dave Duffy but haven't been able to setup a page to disperse that information here on the website as of yet.
November 5, 2016 - I do believe we be having a chili cook-off at this months meeting at Metro! I do recall tasting some real good chili last year and I'm gonna do everything within my power to make it to this one!
Well some days.....I got all ready to go meet my wife at Scott's for a bite before heading to the meeting in Alburnet. I pulled my bike out of the garage, closed the door and hit the starter......click click click......again clickity click click click. Well damn my battery must be dead! Now my Grand Caravan is still packed full of music gear from last nights gig that needs to be dropped off at my other house and the wife, who left only minutes ago, is not answering her phone. So well I go ahead and put the bike back and take the van to Scott's. She had tired of waiting on me by then and went ahead and ordered. Turns out she'd forgotten her phone. The heck with it, I'm already 1/2hour late to the meeting now so I go ahead and order some food!
September 25, 2016 - So just eight years after the worst flood Cedar Rapids had known the town is once again bracing for disaster. I'm sure this is keeping a lot of people very busy and I'm sure we're all praying for the best possible outcome. At our October meeting we must nominate some new officers, let's keep our district alive.
August 18, 2016 - So here we are in August already. I do hope your year has been going well and it would be great to see all of you at the next meeting in Shellsburg. From the July meeting minutes; "Remember, meet at
11:00 a.m. at Metro Harley-Davidson, 2415 Westdale Drive SW, Cedar Rapids for the pre-meeting ride!"
For me it's been a great riding season despite how extremely busy I've been. Yes what a year it's been for me; I had to move last December and bought a house in January. Before I was able to get settled in I met a fabulous new woman and was soon staying with, and spending most of my time, with her. We were married on July 29th during an extended weekend in Las Vegas. Upon returning to Cedar Rapids we left for a week long "Harleymoon" and rode all the way to Thunder Bay in Ontario Canada. Now we need to prep and list both our houses because we need more space. All that combined with full time jobs and my busy musician schedule will keep us occupied for the foreseeable future.
June 24, 2016 - I have some updates from Flipper regarding the Moto Armory Museum ride to East Moline, IL on Saturday July 16th. There will be a special showing of about 770 motorcycles for ABATE District 5 members, family and friends. There is no charge but donations will be accepted. The organized ride will depart from Jerseys Pub & Grub, 5761 C St SW in Cedar Rapids, at 10:00am. The ride is approximately 85 miles with a gas/food stop at 65 miles. If I remember from the meeting we'll stop to eat at the Machine Shed Restaurant along I-80 in Davenport.
In the case of rain members are encouraged to car pool. The address for the museum is 2751 Morton Dr, East Moline, IL. Take I-80 East to Illinois exit 4A - Hwy 5/92 to Morton Dr, Turn right on Morton Drive. For more information call Flipper at 319 444 2974.
June 1, 2016 - Memorial Day is now past, much thanks to those who have served and prayers out to those that gave all. It's rather appropriate perhaps that it marks the symbolic start of Summer, prime time to get out and enjoy the freedom so many have fought for and so many continue to fight for, including members of ABATE!
Gary Bonesteel has informed me of a plan to visit some of our supporting businesses and get in some extra riding before the June meeting. The plan is to leave from Metro Harley at 11:00am and make some stops at supporting businesses along the way as we work our way to the Ron Da Voo Lounge in Vinton. This is a great chance for Cedar Rapids based members to join together as a group and enjoy some riding time together. Sure hope you can make it!
I have some more information from Flipper to post. Saturday July 16th the Moto Armory Museum in East Moline, IL will hold a special showing of about 770 motorcycles for ABATE District 5 members, family and friends. There is no charge but donations will be accepted. An organized ride will depart from Jerseys Pub & Grub, 5761 C St SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404 at 9:30am. The ride will consist of mostly two lane roads with about 20 miles of I-80. For more information call Flipper at 319 444 2974.
April 28, 2016 - Rainy and chilly today as I write this but we've already seen some great riding days this year and it's still only April. Looking forward to a great riding year as I'm sure, are you. Let's all get the season off to a great start by participating in our annual Awareness Ride on Sunday May 1st. Meet up at Sally’s On Broadway for breakfast around 10:30am and be prepared to have a fun day of riding starting at 11:30am and ending with gold fish races at Bobby T’s in Atkins! The route will include stops at Rubies Bar in Centerpoint and The Ozone in Urbana. Please attend if you can.
March 17, 2016 - We've had a few fairly nice days already this year which really brings out the riding bug! I've been able to do a little bit of riding and I hope you have too. I'd really expected to get some more crappy Winter weather but as I write this just before our March meeting things have continued to be relatively mild despite a bit of rain, some wind and some cool days. I hope to see you at the meeting in Anamosa this coming Sunday!
February 2016 - It's still only February but Spring was in the air today, the temperature was up to 49 degrees and the snow has mostly melted. I saw a few bikes ride past the house today. As Iowa dwellers we know that days like this are a tease because we're sure to see some winter weather still but it's great to see some folks take advantage of a nice day while it's available. I'm still quite busy with my new house, unpacking, arranging, cleaning, etc. with the hope that I'll have things pretty well whipped into shape by the time real riding season hits.
I'm posting the photos I took of our District 5 Officers at Wild Hogs during our January meeting so click over to the Officers page and have a look at those!
January 2016 - I apologize for being out of the loop a bit but there's been quite a twist in events of my personal life. Things are starting to get back on track but I still have a lot of things going on that will keep me rather busy. I've found a new house and expect to close on the 22nd of January at which time the hard work of moving begins. Hopefully as mid-February approaches I'll be able to get back into the flow of things. I'll try to get back on track with sending meeting email reminders soon and rest assured I will continue to support our district in this role I volunteered for.
October 2015 - At our October meeting we shall be electing officers. This is an important meeting so please try to attend, the weather should be mild enough for a good ride to Fairfax. Be prepared for some good eating at the November meeting, we'll be having our annual chili feed at Rumors Bar and Grill.
September 2015 - At our September meeting we shall be seeking officer nominations. For those that are interested we will take nominations for Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator, Secretary, Treasurer and Legislative Officer.
August 2015 - August is here and the riding weather is perhaps as good as it gets. Overall I think we've have a pretty good summer for riding and other outdoor activities and hopefully you've had the opportunity to take advantage of some of these beautiful Summer days.
As fun, liberating and exhilarating as riding is I was recently reminded of how quickly things can turn dangerous and even deadly when recently a good friend of mine had what is certain to be a life changing meeting with a deer while out riding his Street Glide. Terry McCauley is a fellow musician and good friend of mine. With our busy schedules it's often difficult for us to get together but the opportunity presented itself on Monday evening last when we went for a three hour ride stopping for dinner and later a beer. We had a great time and a fun ride so on Wednesday when I saw he'd been in a deer/bike accident Tuesday I was completely shocked. Terry is currently struggling in the ICU at U of I Hospital with a list of complications. He will survive but it will be a long recovery and the lingering extent of his injuries are unknown.
In other sad news the Mother of one of our long time members has lost her battle with cancer. Sharon Mott of Vinton, mother of member David Mott, passed away at age 71 on Friday, July 31. The membership offers our heartfelt condolences to David, and the rest of the Mott family, in their time of loss. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.
May 2015 - June is creeping up and man things are busy this time of year! Never seems to be enough time to get everything done. Looking forward to some great outdoor activities though. The band will be playing a lot of outdoor festivals and such and when I'm not busy doing that I'm going to squeeze in some riding. I'm doing my best to keep the webpages up to date but I fell a little behind in May and didn't get everything posted like it should have been. I have been keeping up with e-mails though which I think may be the most important thing right now.
The July meeting will be at Hawkeye Harley Davidson in Coralville. I've posted the listed address but I know they are putting up a new building. That shouldn't cause any problems though because I believe it's right next door to the current building.
May 2015 - May starts out with our Awareness Ride on Sunday, May 3rd. Starting at the American Legion Post 217 in Atkins, address: 89 Main Ave., with a good will donation breakfast will be available starting at 9:00am. Kickstands go up at 11:00am and the ride proceeds to Wee Willy's Pub in Quasqueton, the Ron Da Voo Lounge in Vinton and finally to Coop's Roadhouse in Shellsburg. Let's all turn out and make it a great ride!
April 2015 - The March meeting turned out to be a whole lot of fun with the goldfish races, congratulations to the winners! I'll post photos and details if I can get some.
The April meeting will be held at the O-Zone in Urbana. At this meeting Flipper will be issuing award certificates to full and lifetime members with 20 or more years at district 5. Supporting businesses with 10 years or more will also be given award certificates. Hopefully you can attend for this special event.
March 2015 - The race is on for the March meeting.....goldfish races that is. Directly after the meeting proper the fun begins with a $5.00 entry fee you'll have the chance to win the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th place prize. I haven't tried this before but it sounds like fun and I'm looking forward to having a go at it. I hope to see all of you there and good luck trying to beat my fish!
February 2015 - We had a great turnout at the January meeting, standing room only. Now Spring is another month closer! We'll see you at the February meeting.
January 2015 - Happy New Year everyone! Hope to see you at the January meeting.
December 2014 - Well, Winter came blasting in fast this year and kicked us right in the proverbial sack about mid-November! I recall taking what might be my last ride this year one evening after work in 60 degree weather and when I got home I made certain the snow blower was going to start. The next day temperatures where in the single digits. This is Iowa though and I'm sure we all know that can happen and hopefully we're prepared for such events. Hopefully climate shock has subsided a bit and you'll be able to join us for the December meeting.
November 2014 - Members and guests get half price entrance fee (normally $5.00) to the Motorcycle Museum on meeting day, November 16th. Museum hours are 9:00am to 5:00pm. The exhibits are typically rare finds or even one of a kind items, very interesting for motorcycle enthusiasts and well worth the price of admission on a normal day!
The annual Chili Cookoff will also be held after the 2:00pm meeting there that day. Bring your chili in early and place it in the kitchen before attending the museum. Cost if you bring chili will be $3.00 or if you just want to eat the price is $5.00. The Flyer states that 1st, 2nd & 3rd place prizes will be awarded for chili entries but I was told by Flipper that there will also be 4th, 5th & 6th place prizes. Bring sides if you like and your own beverages of choice (beer and light alcohol are ok). Bottled water, bowls & spoons will be provided. Should be a really fun day, hope you can make it out!
