It all started the night before at the Roadhouse Bar and Grill in Marne, Iowa......the only thing that took away the pain from the tequila hangovers for SOME of us was the cool wind in our hair.....and "SOME" of us did better than "OTHERS"............... We headed out on the highway and stopped at Stuart for a nice breakfast, then on to Des Moines to the Iowa Thunder Run. When we arrived, there was a parking lot full of beautiful bikes! 190 in all that made the run that day. They had a great turn out for the event! The Des Moines Police Department did a super job for us as they had the entire route blocked off from other traffic as Rabbi led the way through the heart of Des Moines, from Southridge Mall to the Veterans Memorial Complex. When we arrived there, they held a beautiful service dedicated to our veterans. I want to try to reiterate the story that Rabbi told us there as I feel it is very important. Being 34 years old, the vietnam war never held a lot of importance to me in the past. I know it was a huge conflict and that our soldiers were treated terribly when they came home after they had gone and fought for their country. I even had a cousin who was there but it still never really had a lot of impact on me. However, Rabbi's words did. Read on:He met a young man in a bar not too long ago, who was wearing a kakhi hat. It was similar to those he had worn but it did not say anything on it about vietnam, etc. Still, there was another young man giving him a bad time about wearing the hat and accusing him of trying to act like a veteran because of the hat. Rabbi told the young men, that he had indeed been in Vietnam. He and all the other soldiers had been there to fight that war, so that WE could wear any hat we chose.....he also said that he had felt flattered that the young man did want to maybe be like him. He went on with a tribute to the families who lost loved ones, sons, fathers, husbands, brothers who never came home. He said a special thanks to the survivors of the survivors. The people who lived through these soldiers return home and return to daily life. The wives, children, girlfriends, siblings, parents. He wanted to make sure that these people were recognized as they are so often forgotten and most don't realize the part they played. It was a very moving memorial to our veterans and Rabbi was a wonderful speaker. After the run, we headed over to Hooters....gotta have those HOT chicken wings! There were a few of us who felt they needed to try a HOOTER SHOOTER but on this one the rest of us bowed out. Of course we couldn't forget it was Wynn's birthday...ahem. Have you ever seen a grown man stand on a stool with a dunce cap on and a weiny hanging out of his mouth, flapping his arms like a chicken???? It is amazing the things you can get a man to do, just to have a bunch of beautiful young women sing happy birthday to him!!!! On the way out, Deacon had the girls pose on his "Hooter Scooter" for a pic! Yes Deacon, we will blow this one up to an 8x10!! The Hooter's girls were great and we thank you! We all had a good ride home in spite of the heavy winds. I do have to say one thing though, it really doesn't take much to entertain this bunch. Just ask them the odds of a car running over a discarded cigarette butt on highway 6 between Anita and Wiota, Iowa. Just ask 'em....Until next time!
